> New Delhi, 26th April, 2013

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo-motu cognizance of a media report that one Mrs. B. Suneela was pushed in front of a speeding lorry by hooligans when she tried to save her daughter from their clutches in District Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. The Commission issuing notices to the State DGP and SP, Guntur, returnable in four weeks, has observed that the contents of the press, if true, raise a serious issue of dignity of women as well as their safety at public places.

Allegedly, the victim, aged 45 years and her daughter - a B.Tech. Student - were returning home after shopping around 09:00 p.m. on Monday, the 8th April 2013, when a group of drunken men accosted them at Gandhi Chowk, Tenali, District Guntur. When one of them tried to grope the girl, her mother pushed him away. Thereafter, the hooligans turned towards the mother and pushed her in front of a speeding lorry. She was rushed to the NRI General Hospital in the nearby Mangalagiri town, but died on the way.
