MR. JUSTICE K.G. BALAKRISHNAN'S FIRST MEDIA CONFERENCE AS
NHRC CHAIRPERSON
Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan addressed a press conference on joining the Commission on the 7th June, 2010. He said that media has an important role to play in the protection and promotion of human rights, and sought its cooperation.
Replying to a question on the powers of the Commission, Justice Balakrishnan said that NHRC is a highly prestigious organization and not a toothless Body.
In response to a question on the court's judgement in the Bhopal Gas tragedy case, he said that in case of dissatisfaction with it, an appeal can be made if the petitioner feels the amount of compensation has not been adequate.
On the issue of delay in the disposal of mercy petitions in the cases of capital punishment, Justice Balakrishnan said that there is no provision to expedite such cases. It is for the President to take a decision in such matters. However, he said that the number of capital punishments is very low in India compared to many countries.
In response to a query on honour killings, the NHRC Chairperson said that there is no need for a separate law on the issue, as killing of any kind is against the law, and there are enough legal provisions to deal with such incidents of violence.
While responding to a question on Naxal violence, he said that it is a complex problem, and that killing of anybody, whether members of public or police personnel, is a violation
of people's right to life, and the security personnel also have their human rights.
