Mumbai Police probe harassment complaint on NHRC's directions

The Commission had received a complaint in January 2005 from a lady belonging to the scheduled castes and employed as a cashier-cum-clerk in a public sector bank in Mumbai. In her complaint, she had alleged that she was being harassed by her senior officer and that though she had brought this to the notice of the higher authorities i.e. the Chairman and Managing Director and General Manager (Personal), no reply was forthcoming from them.
Acting on the basis of her complaint the Commission directed that a copy of her complaint be sent to the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai to look into the allegations. Subsequently, the lady in question sent a letter dated 21 June 2005 to Dr. Justice A.S. Anand, Chairperson, NHRC expressing her gratitude and stating that on the Commission's direction the local police had started investigation. The Commission is now awaiting the police report.
