National Moot Court Competition


The NHRC for the first time organized a National Moot Court Competition on Human Rights in collaboration with the Law Centre - I of the Delhi University from 8th-10th March, 2013. On 10th March, 2013, in his valedictory address as the Chief Guest on the occasion, Justice Shri K.G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, NHRC said that it was immensely satisfying to collaborate with the Law Centre-I of the Delhi University. He hoped that such joint ventures will continue in future also. He described the Delhi University Law Centre as one of the best among the Government Law Colleges. He also gave away the awards to the winning teams. Earlier, he judged the final round of the competition alongwith Justice Shri D. Murugesan, Chief Justice, Delhi High Court and Justice Sushri Geeta Mittal Delhi High Court.

Justice Shri Swatanter Kumar, Chairperson, National Green Tribunal complimented both the NHRC and the Law Centre-I, Delhi University for organizing the competition at national level. He asked the budding lawyers to sincerely adhere to ethics and values of legal practice. He also underlined some of the major environmental concerns like depleting ground water, which he said, needed to be addressed urgently with a collective response from the governments and the people.

Justice Sushri Geeta Mittal also raised the issues relating to ethics of legal practice vis-à-vis growing corporatarization of the profession and asked the students to understand human rights and explore whether there is any difference between them and the fundamental rights.

Earlier, on the 8th March, 2013, the competition began with celebrating the spirit of 'International Women's Day'. Inaugurating it, Justice Shri Madan B. Lokur, Judge of Supreme Court said that such events provide a platform to Law students for their training in presentation and arguing of appeal cases before the courts. He said that Moot Courts are part of clinical legal education which helps in bridging the gap between theory and practice of law.

Shri J.S. Kochher, JS (Trg.), NHRC spoke about the NHRC's commitment towards spreading human rights awareness and importance of such collaborative efforts. Prof. Ved Kumari, In-charge, Law Centre-I, Delhi University also addressed the gathering.

50 teams from various law colleges and universities from across the country participated in the competition. They were given sixteen problems relating to human rights issues which were argued in different rounds of competition before the Judges of Delhi Judicial Services and Delhi High Court before the final round. NHRC Registrar (Law), Shri A.K. Garg and Presenting Officer, Shri G.D. Dhanuka judged the semi-final rounds.
