National seminar "Globalization, Poverty and Human Rights"

The National Human Rights Commission organized a two-day national seminar in Hindi on "Globalization, Poverty and Human Rights" at Mohan Lal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, Rajasthan from 22nd-23rd November, 2012. Inaugurating the seminar, Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, NHRC said that deaths due to hunger and poverty are directly linked to the human rights and these cannot be ignored.
He said that keeping in view the wide national interests, Foreign Direct Investment, FDI, as part of globalization may be accepted but it should not be at the cost of human rights. The Multi-National Companies, MNCs, with their plants and factories not only cause environmental pollution but also impact the lives and cultures of tribal people. Justice Balakrishnan said that the Mexican government has been providing twice a day meal to overcome the problem of deaths due to hunger. In India also, the MNCs need to take up such steps.
Mr. N.N. Mathur, Vice-Chancellor, National Law University, Jodhpur and Prof. I.V. Trivedi, Vice-Chancellor, Mohan Lal Sukhadia University also expressed their concern over the problems relating to poverty and hunger. They were of the view that governments should formulate sustainable schemes to ensure that risks linked to globalization did not impact the employment and other needs of the people.
Mr. J.S. Kochher, Joint Secretary (Training), NHRC said that the Commission was committed to take up issues concerning the welfare of people with the government. Dr. S.K. Shukla, Assistant Director (O.L.), NHRC highlighted the significance of the seminar as its coordinator.
