National Seminar on 'Loksatta, Society and Emerging Dimensions of Human Rights'
The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC organised a two-day National Seminar on 'Loksatta, Society and Emerging Dimensions of Human Rights' organised by the Commission in collaboration with the Savitri Bai Phule Pune University in Pune from the 19th - 20th March, 2015. Justice Shri K.G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, NHRC, inaugurated the seminar as the Chief Guest. He said that one of the emerging dimensions of human rights reflects in the fact that these are being taught as a subject at University level. He congratulated the Savitri Bai Phule Pune University for providing a course of human rights to all its students.
Justice Balakrishnan said that by including the subject of human rights in the curriculum, the universities are helping the Commission in its endeavour towards building awareness about protection and promotion of human rights.
The other prominent speakers, who addressed the inaugural session and the three academic sessions included, among others, women and child rights activist, Dr. Sadik Sayyed, Vice-Chancellor, Savitri Bai Phule Pune University, Prof. W.N. Gade, Prof. Gurjeet Singh, Shri Chaman Lal, Shri Leeladhar Mandloi, Dr. Pratibha and Shri Abdur Rahman.
NHRC Member, Justice Shri Cyriac Joseph addressed the valedictory session as the Chief Guest and under-lined the importance of judiciary, legislature and executive for the rule of democracy in society. He also said that the power to legislate lies with Parliament but it is the Constitution which is supreme. Dr. S.K. Shukla, Assistant Director (Official Language), NHRC coordinated the seminar.
