National Seminar on the Role of Hindi and South Indian languages in the protection and promotion of human rights

The National Human Rights Commission held a two-day national seminar at Hyderabad on the "Role of Hindi and South Indian languages in the protection and promotion of human rights". The seminar held on May 31 and June 1, 2007 was inaugurated by Justice Shri S. Rajendra Babu, Chairperson, NHRC. Justice Shri. B. Subhashan Reddy, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission, Shri Ravi Kamal Bhargava, Secretary General, NHRC and eminent journalist Shri Prabhas Joshi, were present at the inaugural session. On this occasion a glossary of human rights terms (Hindi / English) was released by the Chairperson.

In his inaugural address, the Chairperson said that all the regional languages in the country bring out the basic humane feeling and awareness, which are the basis of Indian philosophy. These regional languages join the mainstream of Hindi and enrich the national language. The Chairperson highlighted that the Commission receives complaints not only in Hindi but also in other regional languages, it is therefore essential that we prepare a glossary of Human rights terms in other languages as well. The Chairperson stressed that without making Hindi or regional language as the medium we cannot reach every corner of the country. Justice Shri S. Rajendra Babu said keeping in view the importance of regional languages the Commission will soon come out with a glossary of Human Rights terms in the four south Indian languages - Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. He emphatically said that with this move cultural and emotional unity can be brought about which will strengthen the foundation of the country.

The Seminar consisted of four academic sessions in which experts from Hindi and other regional languages took part.

Justice Shri Y. Bhaskar Rao, Member NHRC gave the valedictory address at the Seminar. Shri Damodar Sarangi, DG, Investigation, NHRC and eminent Hindi critic Prof Namvar Singh were present on the occasion.
