NCHR of Oman delegation visits NHRC
A six member delegation from the National Commission of Human Rights of Oman led by its Chairman, Mr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Riyami, visited the NHRC on the 25th November, 2011 and interacted with the Members and senior officers of the Commission.
The NHRC delegation was led by Member, Mr. Justice G.P. Mathur. The visiting delegates were briefed on the provisions of the Protection of Human Rights Act, the selection process of the Members of the Commission; jurisdiction, structure and functioning of the Commission including handling of complaints. They were also informed about the help extended by the NHRC to the human rights institutions of different countries for improving their complaint management system.
Mr. Riyami said that the NCHR of Oman is a new institution as it was constituted in the year 2010 under a royal decree issued by the Sultan in 2008 and could learn a lot from NHRC-India. He said that in Oman all citizens, irrespective of their gender, enjoy equal rights, equal opportunity for education and employment. He expressed the hope that this visit would help to improve the functioning of their Commission. He also sought further cooperation from the NHRC in streamlining the work of his Commission.
