New born sold thrice in 10 days: NHRC notices to Police Commissioners, Ludhiana & Delhi and the Union Ministry of Women & Child Development

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that a new born baby was sold three times in 10 days, first by his maternal grandfather and the last by someone to a Delhi businessman through a deal struck on social networking site 'Facebook' before he was rescued.
Allegedly, the child was born on 3rd April 2013 at a private nursing home in Ludhiana, Punjab. He was abducted by his maternal grandfather on the 10th April 2013 and sold for Rs.45000/- with the help of some staff at the nursing home. Then further to a hospital Lab Assistant for Rs.3 lakh and finally to the Delhi businessman for Rs.8 lakh.
Reportedly, a police team raided the house of the Delhi businessman and found that the child was undergoing treatment at a hospital in National Capital. He was handed over to his mother.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press reports, if true, raise a serious violation of human rights of the baby. Notices have been issued to the Police Commissioners, Ludhiana & Delhi and the Secretary, Union Ministry of Women and Child Development to submit reports in the matter within four weeks.
