Shri Damodar Sarangi, has taken over as Director General (Investigation) at NHRC. A 1972 batch IPS officer of West Bengal Cadre, Shri Sarangi was Addl. Director General (East) BSF, Kolkata, prior to his present posting. A Post graduate in Physics from Utkal University, Orissa, Shri Sarangi has worked in various capacities in the Governments of West Bengal and Tripura and also the Central Government. In his 34 years service career, Shri Sarangi has also worked as Additional Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, Inspector General of Police, Intelligence Branch - West Bengal, DIG Vigilance Commission- West Bengal, DIG Midnapur Range- West Bengal, DIG (Range & Headquarters) - Tripura, DIG (Training)- West Bengal, AIG and Additional DG -Police Headquarters, West Bengal.
A recipient of President's Police Medal and Indian Police Medal, Shri Sarangi succeeds Shri D.Mukherjee, who has been posted as Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu.
