The West Bengal State Human Rights Commission has recommended the award of an interim compensation of Rs. 10,000/- to the next of kin of Md. Saukat, an undertrial prisoner detained in Uluberia Sub jail, West Bengal.
Saukat had died at Uluberia sub divisional hospital due to head injury on 11 May 2002. The State Commission was of the opinion that appropriate treatment was not given to the victim in the hour of his need and it is a case of custodial death.
