NGOs Conference

New Delhi May 1, 2007
The National Human Rights Commission has organized a two-day conference on "Role of NGO's in support of NHRC in better promotion and protection of Human Rights" at the Karnataka Judicial Academy, Bangalore on 28 - 29th April, 2007. The Governor of Karnataka, Shri T.N. Chaturvedi has inaugurated the Conference. The former Chairperson of NHRC Justice Shri M.N. Venkatachaliah, also attended. About 150 NGO's from all over the country were invited to participate in the Conference.

The Commission has been holding series of Conferences and consultations with NGO's engaged in promotion and protection of human rights, on regional basis, since Commission firmly believe that NGO's with their vast experience at the field level have immense knowledge of the prevailing situation pertaining to human rights violation at the ground level. The earlier interactions with the NGO's has greatly helped the Commission to enhance its capacity in dealing with various cases of human rights violations of individuals or groups. The present Conference is one such step towards building a close partnership with the NGO's, towards better protection and promotion of human rights of the citizens of the country. This Conference has provided an opportunity, both for the Commission as well as the NGO's to put forth their view freely and frankly on various important thematic issues which have been discussed in this Conference. The recommendations of the Conference will be finalized and circulated in due course after taking into consideration the various views expressed during these interactions. But one view that repeatedly surfaced is that Human Rights violations are largely related to poverty and mal-governance and it is time that equal attention is given to the promotion of Socio-Economic rights as is given to Political and Legal rights. The Members and the officers of the NHRC, speaking on behalf of the Commission, assured that the NHRC is quite sensitive to Human Rights issues and is doing everything in its power to protect and promote such rights.
