NHRC Announces awards for creative writing on Human Rights in Hindi

With a view to encourage original writings in Hindi on various subjects pertaining to Human Rights, the NHRC had introduced an “ Award Scheme for Creative Writings on Human Rights in Hindi”. The scheme envisages 6 awards of which three are given for original writings in Hindi and three for translation in Hindi of works from other Indian languages and English.

The selection committee constituted to select the six awardees from among the entries received for the year 1999-2001 has selected Shri Shailendra Kumar Awasthi for the first prize in the original writing category for his entry “Manavadhikar Vidhi” The book deals with human rights in the universal context, and also deals with arrest, illegal detention by police, murder and death in police custody and Indian police system with relation to Human Rights. The prize carries a cash award of Rs. 25,000/-.

The second prize in this category has gone to Dr. Sarita Shah & Shri K.N.Gupta for their book “Manavdhikar, Sangharsha Sandharbha Avam Niwaran”. The book touches upon various aspects of human rights, like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Indian Constitution, the Indian Judiciary, the State Human Rights Commission and Human Rights Courts etc. The second prize carries cash award of Rs. 20,000/-.

The third prize carrying an award of Rs 15,000/- has been awarded to Dr. Basanti Lal Babel for his book “Pulis Prashashan, Anweshan Avam Manavadhikar”. Aspects like the duties, rights and qualities of a policeman, methods of investigation, powers of police for prevention of crime, guidelines for police with reference to human rights have been dealt with in this book.

In the category of translation, the first prize was awarded to Smt. Vijayalaxmi Sunderrajan for her book ”Dalit Sangh”. This book is the Hindi version of the original work in Tamil titled ‘Sangham’ by K. Chinnappa Bharati and deals with various problems faced by a depressed community in the hills of Tamil Nadu. This award carries a cash prize of 15,000/-.

The second and third prizes of Rs. 10,000/- and 7,500/- in this category went to Dr. P.D. Soni and Prof. P.Madhavan Pillai respectively.

Dr. Soni’s book “Manavadhikar: Samyukta Rashtra Dwara Pahal” is the translated version of “Human Rights UN Initiatives” by Rahul Roy. It deals with Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Vienna Declaration, sensitive issues pertaining to women, prostitution and child abuse. It also deals with the different covenants relating to Human Rights and its protection.

Prof. Pillai’s book “Ye Bhee Manav Hain” is the translated version of Malyali work titled ‘Kurunnukale Mappu’ written by John Kunnapalli, which deals with the different aspects of violation of the human rights of a child.

The awards will be presented by Justice J.S.Verma, Chairperson, NHRC at a special function to be held on 20 June 2002 in New Delhi.
