NHRC asks for report from DGP Punjab on alleged
police brutality on girls in Ludhiana

The National Human Rights Commission has asked for a report from DGP, Punjab on the alleged police brutality on peaceful and unarmed girl students at Ludhiana recently. Acting on a complaint, the Commission said that if the content therein are true, they raise serious issue of violation of human rights and offend the supreme dignity of women folks.
The complaint submitted by Ms. Paramjit Kaur Gulshan, MP & others, alleged that about 20 girls from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University were sitting on a peaceful dharna at Punjab Agricultural University on Sept. 20, 2006 where a Kisan Mela, was organized. They were protesting against their unemployment and non-recognition of the degree of the University.
The Punjab Chief Minister, Capt. Amarinder Singh was to participate in the function. The complaint said, the police personnel mostly males, in order to evict the girl students used force, dragged them, hit them with lathis, pulled them by hair, abused and even molested them.
The complaint also contained photographs of the incident and alleged that the action took place in the presence of senior police officers including SSP, Jagraon along with SP and DSP. It requested for appropriate action in the matter.
The Commission has ordered that a copy of the complaint along with enclosures be transmitted to DGP, Punjab for a report within two weeks.
