NHRC asks Jharkhand Government to pay rupees 10,000/- each to twenty students, victim of food poisoning
(Case No. 1312/34/16/08-09)

Some students of the Government Scheduled Tribes Residential High School, Ranchi, Jharkhand fell sick due to food poisoning and five of them lost their lives. The Commission had received a complaint on the 16th January, 2009 from Mr. R.H. Bansal in the matter. In response to Commission's notice, the state authorities said that rupees 5 lakh each was paid to the next of kin of deceased children. Setting aside the claim of the State Government that the sick children need not be compensated as the cost of their treatment was meted out by the government, the Commission recommended that the Government of Jharkhand pay compensation of
rupees 10 thousand each to all the 20 students also, who fell sick due to negligence of the school officials.
