NHRC asks Tamil Nadu Government to take legal action against the Head Mistress who asked girl students to clean toilet in Tirunelveli (17.6.2015)

PRESS RELEASE

New Delhi, Dated: 17th June, 2015

The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Government of Tamil Nadu to show cause why Rs.25 thousand should not be paid as relief to the two girl students of Panchayat Union Middle School, Vettankulam, Tirunelveli, who were made to clean toilet by the Head Mistress. Mr. Justice D. Murugesan, Member of the Commission has also recommended that the State Government initiate legal action against the Head Mistress of the school for her misconduct.

During the course of enquiry, the Commission found that the two girl students were the daughters of a sweeper who, on that particular day, had not turned up for the job. Therefore, the Head Mistress asked her daughters to clean the toilet.

The Commission has also observed that Rs.20 per week being paid to the sweeper for cleaning the toilet cannot be justified as a reasonable wage under any standard. Accordingly, it has asked the Secretary, Department of Social Justice, Government of Tamil Nadu to take action and submit the report along with the response to the show cause notice within six weeks.
