NHRC at the Commonwealth Conference of National Human Rights Institutions
The three-day Conference of National Human Rights institutions of Commonwealth Countries was held at London from Feb 26 to 28, 2007. The discussions among NHRIs countries explored the possibility to constitute a forum of National Commonwealth NHRIs. A Steering Committee was constituted with NHRIs of India, New Zealand, Canada and Uganda as members to go into different issues for the formation of the forum. The Steering Committee members will discuss the format of the forum, what should be its membership and how it should operate. NHRI Uganda will be the hosting platform of NHRIs of Commonwealth, at the time of CHOGM summit at Kampala.
India's country presentation was given by Justice Y.Bhaskar Rao, Member NHRC, at the Conference. He outlined the working of NHRC, India and highlighted the independent and autonomous nature of the Commission.
