NHRC Chairperson inaugurates a two-day training programme for police personnel and law students in New Delhi
PRESS RELEASE
New Delhi, 29th November, 2013
The NHRC Chairperson, Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, inaugurated a two-day training programme for police personnel on "Policing and Human Rights: Issues and Challenges" at Indian Law Institute in New Delhi today. The programme has been jointly organised by the NHRC and the Indian Law Institute.
Addressing the participants, comprising officers from CBI Academy, Ghaziabad and LLM students, he said that most of the complaints made to the Commission relate to various acts of omission and commission by police personnel, which underlines the importance of their sensitization towards the protection of human rights. The NHRC has designed such training modules in collaboration with the IGNOU towards this objective.
Referring to the recent changes in the Indian Evidence Act, Criminal Procedure Code and the Indian Penal Code through the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, Justice Balakrishnan said that these have added more responsibility on police personnel.
He said that police personnel needed to be updated on a regular basis with the changes in the legislation and procedures. He also said that they should not relent to any undue external pressure while discharging their duties.
