NHRC condemns killing of more than 70 CRPF personnel by Naxalites in Chhattisgarh
New Delhi, April 7th, 2010
The National Human Rights Commission is disturbed by news of the killing of more than 70 CRPF and district police personnel by the Naxalites in Dantewada district of the State of Chhattisgarh while discharging their duties today on the 6th April, 2010 and condemns the growing cult of violence being adopted by certain vested interests in the society.
The Commission is of the firm view that any movement or action in the name of struggle for the rights of the citizens looses its legitimacy the moment it resorts to violence which is the anti thesis of protection of human rights.
The police and para-military forces are the instruments of the State to enforce rule of law and order and thus protect human rights of the citizens. In this process they are themselves exposed to high risks to their own lives as well as their families. The Commission acknowledges the vital role played by the police and para-military forces in maintaining the security of the State.
It is expected that the state will take note of the sacrifices made by the personnel of CRPF and the police in maintaining the rule of law and creating an environment of peace and security for the citizens of the country.
The Commission accords paramountcy to the protection of the human rights of all the citizens in the country. It needs no emphasis that the aggrieved family would be suitably compensated.
