NHRC condemns top UP Government officer's comment on four suicides in the State: issues notice to the Chief Secretary.

The National Human Rights Commission has condemned the behaviour of the then Secretary (Home), UP Government, who, while answering a question before media on the reason behind the four suicides in the State, replied that birth is the reason behind death and loudly laughed it away. Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports on the issue, the Commission has described his comments as utterly insensitive for human dignity. It has taken note of the news report that the officer has been transferred from the post of Secretary (Home). However, it has asked the Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh to submit a detailed report on the issue within four weeks.
Reportedly, the concerned officer was asked a question by media persons as to what was the reason behind the suicidal deaths of four persons, including a man and his three children when this comment was made without showing any sign of sorrow of sympathy. They had committed suicide in Sonebhadra district of the State on 22nd May, 2013.
