NHRC delegation visits Gaya District of Bihar
An NHRC delegation headed by Member, Shri S.C. Sinha and comprising Shri A.K. Shrivastava, Joint Secretary and Shri Indrajeet Kumar, Assistant Registrar visited Gaya from 12th to 15th June, 2013. The delegation held meetings with the senior police and administrative officers and discussed several issues relating to police and public service, health, education, custodial justice, Gaya Jail, status of complaints of SCs/STs, housing for weaker sections, NHRC cases pending with the District authorities, etc. The officers were sensitized about the importance of human rights and the implementation of social welfare schemes to ensure that maximum benefits reached the targeted groups.
The delegation visited a school for SC/ST students, Aanganwadi Centers, the houses of Indira Awas Yojana beneficiaries and a Health Centre of a village to make an on the spot assessment of the situation. The delegation also visited Gaya Jail to see the functioning of the jail authorities and the facilities available to the prisoners.
It also interacted with about 30 representatives of NGOs and Panchayats who shed light on their work and challenges and also gave suggestions to strengthen implementation of welfare schemes at grassroot level. The delegation appreciated the work of Jeevika, a World Bank project.
