NHRC for more freedom to media for reporting than curbs, says Mr Justice KG Balakrishnan

New Delhi, April 27th, 2012

A day long 'Workshop on human rights and functioning of NHRC for media persons' organized by the National Human Rights Commission concluded in New Delhi today. Addressing about forty participants from different parts of the country and representing print, electronic and news agency organizations, Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, NHRC said that the media has an important role in the promotion and protection of human rights.

He said that the workshop aims at giving an orientation to media persons in order to build awareness among them with a rights based perspective to report on human rights. With reference to a question on the NHRC's stand on the Supreme Court appointing a committee to make guidelines for media reporting, Justice Balakrishnan said that the Commission is a formal party in the matter, however it has decided not to intervene in it, as the issue is only about reporting on court proceedings and not for general issues.

The NHRC would not like to have any curb on media reporting and it would rather want to have as much increased interface with media as possible for building awareness on human rights issues. The workshop divided into four thematic sessions was also addressed by NHRC Members and senior officers on various aspects of the functioning of the Commission and human rights laws in the country.
