NHRC, HelpAge to promote health week for elderly

New Delhi, 9 March 2006
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the HelpAge India have joined hands to promote a health awareness week for the elderly in Delhi, from March 20 - 24, 2006. As part of the effort, senior medical practitioners will address older people from across the capital on various health issues affecting them.
With longevity increasing and the aged being the fastest growing section of society, their health and medical care have assumed great significance. Many new-age diseases and conditions, which are not fully understood by both the elderly and their caregivers, are taking their toll. The weeklong initiative by NHRC and HelpAge is an attempt to address crucial needs of the grey segment, and to spread awareness of diseases that affect them.
"In many cases, early detection goes a long way in successful treatment of a disease, thereby reducing the pain and agony of the person and his/her family", says Mrs. Aruna Sharma, Joint Secretary, NHRC explaining the objective behind this joint effort. Mr. Mathew Cherian, Chief Executive of HelpAge expressed hope that "knowledge of symptoms and treatment will encourage the elderly to seek timely medical help."
Doctors and Professors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Maulana Azad Medical College, St. Stephen's Hospital and other reputed institutions will hold sessions on a number of subjects ranging from the most common heart attacks and strokes, diabetes, vision impairment, arthritis and bone disorders, diseases of prostate, etc. Sessions on nutrition for the elderly and specific health concerns of older women are also scheduled.
The health week will be inaugurated by Dr. Justice A.S. Anand, Chairperson, NHRC. Older people from more than 30 Resident Welfare and Senior Citizens' Associations are expected to attend. The week will be organized at the PHD House, August Kranti Marg, New Delhi.
