NHRC, India hosts 'Advance Human Rights Education Programme' for the Master Trainers of 13 NHRIs in Asia Pacific Region (11.6.2014)

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is hosting a prestigious three-day 'Advanced Human Rights Education Programme' facilitated by the Asia Pacific Forum (APF) which began in New Delhi today. Master Trainers from 13 NHRIs of Asia Pacific Region, including India, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Jordan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand Philippines, Palestine, Sri Lanka and Thailand are participating in it.

The aim of the programme is to strengthen familiarization of the Trainers of Trainers with the theoretical frameworks of adult education and human rights education; their effective implementation; and strategizing the development of human rights education programme as per the requirement of each NHRI in the region.

Inaugurating the programme, Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, NHRC said that human rights education is of utmost importance in a society to ensure that human rights are respected and promoted for the dignity of all. It gives every individual a scope to self-introspect and adopt attitudes and approaches encouraging respect for the rights of all.

The NHRC Chairperson said that the Preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has also emphasized that education about rights is the foremost right that leads to the full and free development of an individual. The NHRC, India, understanding the importance of the human rights education has been promoting human rights education through various means among different target groups, particularly the public functionaries, including police personnel, para-military forces, teachers, officers, on various issues pertaining to human rights.

Expressing his happiness over the opportunity to hoste this programme at the initiative of the APF, Justice Balakrishnan hoped that the participants will immensely benefited from it and make further use of their knowledge by sharing it with others.

The Master Trainers are those representatives of NHRIs who have been especially trained to plan, strategize and conduct human rights education training programmes for their respective NHRIs as well as for the programmes of Asia Pacific Region as Resource Persons. This programme is in the series of interactions among the Master Trainers to update and share their experiences and knowledge to further strengthen the human rights education programmes.
