NHRC interns interact with Delhi Police personnel

New Delhi, June 8th, 2012

A batch of about 30 Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors of Delhi Police interacted with a batch of about 50 NHRC interns in New Delhi today. Moderating the dialogues between the two groups Mr. Sunil Krishna, Director General (Investigation), NHRC said that there could be some practical problems in day-to-day functioning, but these should not be a cause for the police personnel to be insensitive towards human rights. Mr. Arya Priya, a former NHRC intern gave an insight into various aspects relating to human rights laws and policing.

During the interaction programme, most of the issues and experiences shared by the young inters about police functioning in different parts of the country included, among others, non-registration of FIRs, victimization of poor people, wrongful confinement, false implications, insensitivity towards women, fear approaching police, corruption.

The police personnel said that there could be exceptions, but giving a bad name to the entire police force will not be correct. Sharing experience of Delhi police in particular, they said that it is being ensured at all police stations there are sufficient women police personnel to deal with complaints involving women. However, they did not have any specific answer to a query raised by an intern about a media report, based on a sting operation, wherein police personnel were found alleging that if young girls and women go out of their houses after 8:00 p.m. then perhaps they themselves invited the trouble.

The idea of this kind of a dialogue is to create an interface between the young citizens coming from different parts of the country with police personnel through a candid and first hand account of each others' perception in order to finally orient themselves towards the cause of protection and promotion of human rights.

Mr. Viplav Kumar Choudhry and Mr. Pupul Dutta Prasad, SSPs, Investigation Division, NHRC along with other officers were also present during the interactive session organized by the Training Division of the Commission.
