NHRC interns interact with Delhi Police personnel

A batch of about 30 Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors of Delhi Police interacted with the batch of about 49 NHRC interns in New Delhi on the 8th June, 2012. Moderating the dialogue between the two groups, Mr. Sunil Krishna, Director General (Investigation), NHRC said that there could be some practical problems in day-to-day functioning of police, but these cannot be a reason for their insensitivity towards human rights. Mr. Arya Priya, a former NHRC intern in his powerpoint presentation gave an insight into various aspects relating to human rights laws and policing.
During the interaction programme, the young interns shared their experiences about police functioning in different parts of the country. These included among others, non-registration of FIRs, victimization of poor people, wrongful confinement, false implications, insensitivity towards women, fear in approaching police, corruption.

The police personnel said that there could be some exceptions, but giving a bad name to the entire police force will not be correct. Sharing experience of Delhi police in particular, they said that it is being ensured at all police stations that there are sufficient women police personnel to deal with complaints involving women. However, they did not have any specific answer to a query raised by an intern about a media report, based on a sting operation, wherein police personnel were found alleging that young girls and women going out of their houses after 8:00 p.m. themselves invite trouble.
The idea of this kind of a dialogue was to create an interface between the young citizens coming from different parts of the country with police personnel in order to orient them towards the cause of protection and promotion of human rights.
Mr. Viplav Kumar Choudhry and Mr. Pupul Dutta Prasad, SSPs, Investigation Division, NHRC along with other officers were also present during the interactive session organized by the Training Division of the Commission.
