NHRC intervention provides medical relief to jailed political leader of J&K
The Commission received a complaint from the Secretary General, Jammat-E-Islami, Jammu & Kashmir dated 29 January 2003, alleging ill-treatment of the ailing Shri Syed Ali Shah Geelani, a political leader of J&K who had been detained in Central Jail, Birsa Munda, Ranchi in Jharkhand under the Public Safety Act.
The complaint stated that the victim had developed many serious ailments during his detention, and adequate medical facilities had not been made available to him. The doctors attending him in jail had recommended his immediate shifting to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, but no steps were being taken in this regard.
The case was considered by the Commission and on 19 February 2003 the Commission directed its Secretary General to ascertain the facts form the Home Secretary, Government of India and the Chief Secretary, Government of Jammu & Kashmir. Accordingly, the Secretary General of the Commission, Shri P. C. Sen, wrote to the Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India and to the Chief Secretary Government of Jammu & Kashmir.
The Commission has been informed by the J&K Government that Shri Syed Geelani has been shifted to Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Mumbai for medical treatment. The State Government is bearing the entire expenditure for the treatment of Shri Geelani at the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital.
