NHRC issue notice to the Government of Punjab on malfunctioning in water supply scheme in Ludhiana (23.5.2014)

PRESS RELEASE

New Delhi, 23rd May, 2014

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that despite spending more than Rs.14 lakh to augment the water supply at Haripur and Harnampur Villages in District Ludhiana, the Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation Department has not been able to provide chlorinated water supply and an over-head water tank for storage.
Reportedly, the Contractor was paid without actually completing the work of laying down the pipeline properly along with storage facilities as a result, the villagers had to depend on water from tube wells which work only when there is power supply.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of right to safe drinking water and has issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Punjab, calling for a report within four weeks.
