NHRC issues a notice to the UP Government on the death of a truck driver due to beating by a woman transport officer

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that a woman transport officer and her colleagues in Uttar Pradesh beat to death a truck driver when he did not respond to her extortion demands. The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, amount to violation of the human rights and issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of the state calling for a factual report within four weeks.
The truck was on its way to Andhra from Delhi with food grains. The cleaner of the truck allegedly told police that their truck bearing registration number AT 5W 1257 was stopped by the UP Transport Staff at Runakta Check Post in the Sikandra Police Station area of Agra District at around 3.00 am on the 14th September, 2011.
The driver T Ramarao produced all relevant documents, but the Assistant Regional Transport Officer, who was sitting in her vehicle by the side of the road and her staff demanded Rs.4000/-. When Ramarao refused to pay the money, the officer and the staff reportedly badly assaulted him to death.
