NHRC issues notice to Chandigarh Administration on allegations of malfunctioning in emergency services of three Hospitals

The National Human Rights Commission has taken cognizance of a media report alleging that emergency wards in three government hospitals in Chandigarh were not catering to critical needs of patients properly. The report was carried on 6th February, 2013. The three hospitals which were found erring during a check in the night of 5th February, 2013 include Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector -16 and Government Medical College & Hospital, Sector 32.
Reportedly, patients were getting lost in the hospitals due to lack of coordination between the staff. Medical personnel deputed on emergency duty were found missing from their seats.
The Commission has observed that the pathetic conditions in the government hospitals, as reported, are deplorable and if immediate remedial steps are not taken, the same may lead to loss of precious lives. Right to Health being an important human right, the Commission deems its duty to intervene in the matter. Accordingly, a notice has been issued to the Administrator, Union Territory of Chandigarh to submit a report in the matter within four weeks.
The media report was forwarded by Mr. Avinash Rai Khanna, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) seeking intervention of the Commission.
