NHRC issues notice to Delhi Government on corporal punishment

The media carried reports on the 27th November, 2009 alleging that Lucky Bhola, aged 12 years, a student of the Government Senior Bal Vidyalaya, A Block, Jahangirpuri, Delhi was severely beaten up by his teacher Brahma Prakash, because he went out of the class to drink water without taking his permission. On his return to his house, Bhola complained of pain in his left hand. He was taken to Babu Jagjeevan Ram Hospital, where fracture was diagnosed in his hand. Taking suo motu cognizance of these reports, the National Human Rights Commission issued a notice to the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT, Delhi observing that the contents of the press report, if true, raise serious issue of violation of human rights of the student. A report was sought from the concerned authorities in the matter.
