New Delhi, 25th November, 2013
The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that the Public Distribution System (PDS) is almost dysfunctional in the Teesa Sub-Division of Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh since last three months. Essential commodities like sugar and mustard oil are in extreme short supply forcing poor people in the remote hill areas to buy such these from open market at an exorbitant price.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human right of food. Accordingly, a notice has been issued to District Magistrate, Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, calling for a report within four weeks.
