NHRC issues notice to Kerala, Chief Secretary on Chikungunya deaths
New Delhi July 12, 2007 The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Kerala, on 40 deaths reported in the State due to Chikungunya. The report which appeared in print as well as electronic media had highlighted that more than one lakh people had been affected by the infection. The reports also said that Army teams had been called to combat the spread of Chikungunya.
After going through different reports, the Commission said that such incidents are violation of the Rights to Health of the people of the State. It also directed that the Investigation Division of the Commission should depute a team of investigators to assess the prevailing situation in the State and submit report within four weeks.
