NHRC issues notice to Police Commissioner Nasik
on the Death of a Dalit Youth

New Delhi, December 9, 2006

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the Police Commissioner, Nasik, following a press report, which said a dalit youth was beaten to death by mob on Nov 29, 2006 during recent violence in Maharashtra.
Taking suo-motu cognizance of a report which said that Rangnath Shankar Dhale, a 23 year old resident of hutments at Muktidham in Nasik City was beaten to death by a mob for allegedly pelting stones on passing vehicles on Nasik road. The report published in 'The Tribune' on Nov. 30, 2006 said the incident took place during protests against vandalisation of a statue of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
The Commission said that if the contents of the news report are true, there is serious issue of violation of Human Rights of the citizen. The Commission has directed that a copy of the press report be sent to the Police Commissioner, Nasik for a factual report within two weeks.
