NHRC issues notice to the DG, Health Services, Bihar

The National Human Rights Commission has sent notice to the Director General, Health Services, Bihar on a report captioned 'Thak Gaya Hai Janjeer Mai Jakra Rajeev' which appeared in Rashtriya Sahara on February 12, 2007. The report said that Rajeev Giri fell ill about 8 years back and due to negligence of doctors who attended on him and became mentally ill. His father had to sell off agricultural land for the treatment of Rajiv and he also took loan from local moneylenders. The report further said that at present Rajeev is not being provided medical treatment or medicines due to want of money. He has been tied in chains and is fighting for life.
Taking suo-motu cognizance of the press report, the Commission said if the content is true, it raises the serious issue of violation of human rights of the poor suffering from ailments. The Commission has given two weeks time to the State authorities for a factual report.
