NHRC issues notices to Chief Secretary and DGP, Uttar Pradesh Government on the arrest of a senior journalist

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC has taken cognizance on complaints alleging that Bureau Chief of IBN-7 News Channel was picked up by police personnel after the Channel reported about deceased Dy. C.M.O. Y.S. Sachan's injuries could not be self-inflicted.

The Commission received two complaints in the matter, one from Mr. Lenin Raghuvanshi, Secretary General, PVCHR/JMN, Varanasi and another from Mr. R.H. Bansal, Chief Editor, Human Rights Observer, Delhi on the 27th June, 2011.

The Commission observed that the allegations framed by the complainants, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights of the victim and issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Government of Uttar Pradesh calling for their detailed reports in the matter within a week.

Earlier, the Commission, on the death of Dr. Yogendra Singh Sachan, Deputy CMO in judicial custody, had issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh, District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Lucknow calling for their reports in the matter. It had also directed the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Jail, Lucknow to explain as to why the intimation about the death in custody was not reported within 24 hours to NHRC, as per its guidelines.
