NHRC issues notices to the DM and SP, Barabanki, UP on allegations of forced manual scavenging and police inaction

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that some influential people of village Adra, Police Station Badasarai, Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh forced a dalit for manual scavenging at gunpoint. The incident was reported on the 24th September, 2013 alleging that the police did not register the complaint of the victim under appropriate sections of law.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of a dalit youth. It has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh calling for a report in the matter within two weeks.
