NHRC issues notices to the Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala Governments on farmers' suicide

The National Human Rights Commission taking suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging fresh wave of farmers' suicide during the current year in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala has issued notices to the Chief Secretaries of these States calling for their reports in the matter within six weeks.
Allegedly 680 farmers have committed suicide in just six districts of Maharashtra during 2011.90 farmers committed suicide in six districts of Andhra Pradesh from October-November. 8 cases of farmers' suicide have come to light from Wayanad district in Kerala in November.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the poor farmers in the States of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
