NHRC looks forward to more interaction with Canada

Mr. David Spring, Director General, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), visited the Commission on 5 July 1999.

Welcoming him to the Commission, Mr. Justice M.N.Venkatachaliah, Chairperson of the Commission said that NHRC has always maintained excellent relationships with the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) and was looking forward to cooperation in many more areas in common interest.

Talking about the universality of human rights, the Chairperson said that human rights today meant different things to different people but the basic concern of all should be human dignity. He said that on account of a growing chasm in perceptions, the human rights debate between the developed and developing countries had become more and more contentious and adversarial. He felt that international discourse in this area should become more cooperative and consensual. He stressed the need to build human bridges across the oceans.

The Chairperson said that the Commission welcomed cooperation with its Canadian counterpart in fields related to primary and non-formal education, the justice delivery system – both criminal and civil – and the honing of skills of investigators.

Mr. David Spring said that universal respect for human rights was the concern of all nations and CIDA would be happy to be a catalyst tin developing close relationships between India and Canada. He said that direct interaction between the two Commissions would be beneficial to both the countries.
