NHRC meets Members of Committee on Police Reforms

The Chairperson and Members of the National Human Rights Commission held a meeting with the Committee on Police Reforms which is headed by Shri K. Padmanabhaiah, former Union Home Secretary. Shri N.D, Sharma, IPS (Retd.), Shri Amitabh Gupta, IPS, DGP, Rajasthan and Shri B.B. Nanda, IPS, DG, BPR&D, who are members of the Committee, were also present.

The Committee has been set up by the Ministry of Home Affairs to examine and specify the challenges that the Indian Police would face in the new millennium, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the organisation and structure of the police force, see whether the gap between public expectations and police performance can be filled, and envision a new look, people-friendly and fighting-fit police force which can win the confidence and trust of the people and at the same time effectively tackle the problems of organised crime, militancy and terrorism. The Committee is also to look into the various changes which can be brought about to transform the police, including matters relating to recruitment at different levels, training, accountability, redressal, techniques of investigation etc.

The Commission reviewed the ideas being considered by the Committee and gave its advice and recommendations on different aspects of Police Reforms, drawing attention in particular to issues it had highlighted in successive Annual Reports.
