NHRC Member, Justice Shri Cyriac Joseph leads a team to Bidar
A team of the NHRC, led by Justice Shri Cyriac Joseph, Member visited district Bidar, Karnataka from 24th to 28th September, 2013 as part of the Commission's programme of visits to 28 districts to assess the level of awareness about Government schemes and human rights. The other team members included Dr. Savita Bhakhry, D.S. (R), Smt. Shoba George, D.S. (A), Shri Indrajeet Kumar, A.R. (Law), Shri Mahabeer Singh, PPS and Shri K.H.C. Rao, Dy. S.P.
Inputs were taken from the district administration on the status of the implementation of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), Mid-Day Meals Scheme (MDMS), Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), etc. The district administration also reported on the novel initiatives undertaken, particularly in the field of education and computerization of land records.
To assess the situation on the ground, the delegation interacted with the Gram Sabha at the Kangatta Village and also visited the Anganwadi and Primary Health Centres there. The district hospital, jail, PDS shops, some children homes and primary and secondary schools in the district were also visited.
Later on the 27th September, 2013, Justice Joseph inaugurated a workshop on "Human Rights Aware-ness and Facilitating Assessment of Enforcement of Human Rights at District Bidar". The Members of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, senior level district functionaries, functionaries of District Legal Services Authority and members of civil society participated in the workshop. The recommendations arising out of the visit of the NHRC delegation are being sent to the State Government for necessary action.
