NHRC Member, Mr. Justice Cyriac Joseph leads Commission's team to riot hit Muzaffarnagar and Shamli Districts of Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi, 9th October, 2013

A team of National Human Rights Commission headed by Mr. Justice Cyriac Joseph, Member and comprising Mrs. Kanwaljit Deol, Director General (Investigation), Mr. A.K. Garg, Registrar (Law), Mr. C.K. Tyagi, Presenting Officer, Mr. S.K. Jain, SSP and Shri Nitin Kumar, Inspector will be visiting Muzaffarnagar and Shamli Districts of Uttar Pradesh on the 10th & 11th October, 2013.

The team will conduct spot enquiry regarding relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken by the State government for the displaced people affected by communal violence. It will meet the officials of the administration of the two districts and also interact with the NGOs to make an overall assessment of the situation.

The Commission has already sent a questionnaire to the District Magistrates of Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts, seeking specific information on various issues, including, among others, loss of human life, property, displaced persons, missing persons, orphaned children and injured and incidents of rape/sexual assault on the victims of communal violence, if reported.

They have also been asked information pertaining to uninterrupted supply of food at affordable prices to the riot affected villages, arrangement of education of children staying in relief camps, details of monetary relief paid or proposed to be paid for loss of human life and property, reconciliatory measures taken to restore peace and harmony, number of arrests made and FIR registered and steps taken to prevent spreading of rumour and misinformation.
