Shri S.C. Sinha, Member, NHRC visited Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh from the 5th - 8th September, 2013. He held meetings with senior officers of the district administration and sensitised them on human rights issues. He also briefed them about the functioning of the NHRC and made an assessment of the implementation of various welfare schemes run by the Centre and the State government. Later, he visited the Government Hospital for Mental Health Care in the district, which is among the first four mental hospitals set up in the southern region. He observed that the hospital was facing problems of shortage of specialised drugs, financial resources, support staff, power supply and rehabilitation of cured patients and non-payment of wages to the security guards.
