NHRC notice to DCP North East Delhi over allegation of police inaction in a case of abduction and forced marriage of a minor girl. (05.6.2015)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a minor girl, resident of Shastri Park in East Delhi, was kidnapped and forced to marry. The police registered a case of kidnapping but took no action against the kidnappers. The accused continued to threaten the family of the victim.
According to the media report, carried on the 29th May, 2015, the accused kidnapped the minor girl while she was going to school. The accused threatened the father of the victim of dire consequences, when tried to free his daughter. The local police did not take any action even after a month of registration of an FIR for kidnapping on the complaint of the father of the victim.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim. Accordingly, it has issued a notice to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, North-East Delhi calling for a report within two weeks. He has also been asked to mention the steps taken for protection of the family of the victim.
