NHRC notice to DMs of Salem and Dharmapuri and Principal Secretary, Medical and Health, Government of Tamil Nadu over reports of children's death in Government Hospitals (21.11.2014)

New Delhi, 21st November, 2014

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that in a period of one week, a large number of infants/babies died at Dharamapuri Government Hospital and Government Mohan Kumar Mangalam Medical College Hospital, Salem in Tamil Nadu. Reportedly, the reason behind these deaths was malnutrition and medical negligence.

Mr. Justice D. Murugesan, Member, NHRC has observed that the contents of the media reports, if true, raised a serious issue of violation of human rights. Accordingly, notices have been issued to the Principal Secretary, Medical and Health Department, Government of Tamil Nadu and District Magistrates of Salem and Dharmapuri calling for reports within four weeks.
