NHRC notice to Government of Chhattisgarh on gas leakage in Bhilai Steel Plant (13.6.2014)

The National Human Rights Commission taking suo motu cognizance of media reports on the gas leakage in the Bhilai Steel Plant has issued a notice to the Government of Chhattisgarh, through its Chief Secretary, calling for a report within two weeks. The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of right to life and health of the victims.
Reportedly, six people, including three senior officials, were killed and many others were injured in an incident of gas leakage at the Bhilai Steel Plant in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh on the 12th June, 2014. The leakage occurred in a methane gas pipeline at the water pump house in the plant.
