NHRC notice to Government of Rajasthan over reports of rape by a police officer at an Outpost in Jhunjhunu (29.7.2015)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that an ASI posted in Police Post Chanana, Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan raped a woman whom he had called to the Outpost on the pretext of resolving the case of her husband who was in police custody in a case of illicit liquor. Reportedly, the police official threatened the victim not to disclose the incident to anyone.

The Commission has observed that the country is fighting against the menace of crime against women. The contents of the press report, carried on the 17th July, 2015, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the woman. Accordingly, it has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Rajasthan calling for a report in the matter within four weeks.
