NHRC notice to Maharashtra Government over reports of attack on a social activist Govind Pansare and his wife in Kolhapur (18.2.2015)

New Delhi, 18th February, 2015
The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that an eighty year old social activist, Mr. Govind Pansare and his wife were shot at by some un-identified persons in Kolhapur, Maharashtra on the 16th February, 2015. According to media reports, both of them had to undergo several surgeries and were battling for life. Mr. Pansare was of late leading an anti-toll movement in Kolhapur.
The Commission considers the incident as very serious and has observed that it is the duty of the State to recognize and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by Human Rights Defenders and create an environment in which they can act safely and feely. It has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Maharashtra calling for reports within four weeks.
