NHRC notice to SP, Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu over chopping of a boy's hand by the husband of Narikudi Panchayat President (26.08.2014)

New Delhi, 26th August, 2014

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that on allegations of showing disrespect, the husband of Narikudi Panchayat President along with two others, severed the left hand of a 17 year old boy, Karthik, in District Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu on the 19th August, 2014.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim. Accordingly, a notice has been issued to the Superintendent of Police, Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu calling for a report within two weeks.

Allegedly, the boy had shown disrespect towards the Panchayat President's husband by not standing up while he moved past him two days ago. To avenge insult, the husband of the Panchayat President along with his two brothers way laid the victim while he was on way to Sivaganga. They dragged him into nearby bushes and severed a portion of his left hand.
