NHRC notice to SSP, Ajmer over reported denuding of a woman by police during search (01.12.2015)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that police personnel of PS Dargah, District Ajmer, Rajasthan outraged the modesty of a women by forcibly denuding her in the police station while searching for a stolen mobile phone. She was also beaten when no mobile phone was recovered from her. The victim has made a complaint to the Additional Superintendent of Police, City, Ajmer.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim woman. Accordingly, it has issued a notice to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Ajmer, Rajasthan calling for a report within two weeks.
According to the media report, the incident happened on the 21st November, 2015 when the victim, while marketing in the Dargah Bazar area, was caught by another woman alleging that she had stolen her mobile phone. Two lady Constables took the victim to the police station. Allegedly, one of the police personnel there forcibly got her clothes off, made indecent comments and threatened to implicate her sister also in a false case.
